Anger Management Seminars

December 31st, 2011

If you have problems controlling your temper, you may want to consider enrolling in one of the many popular anger management seminars. There are sure to be some available in your area. If not, you can always suggest that a social services organization sponsor one of these anger management seminars. They are helpful and often fun ways to deal with a potentially distressing problem that can affect the lives of many people.

First, learn a little bit more about anger management in general, and anger management seminars, in particular, by visiting websites like anger-management-information.com. There you can access loads of helpful information about anger management techniques, training, and support, as well as other useful data. Although some sites may not list locations of actual anger management seminars in your area, you can find one near you by browsing the telephone directory yellow pages or white business pages. Then all you have to do is call the listed number for details.

Why Enroll in Anger Management Seminars?

Anger management seminars are held for people who have trouble controlling their tempers. They may be prone to unexpected verbal outbursts, or they might act out their anger in unacceptable ways by raising their voice, arguing with others on little provocation, or becoming physically violent and possibly hurting themselves or others, as well as perhaps damaging furniture or other items. Sometimes you just cant reason with people who get out of control in this fashion. Thats when an expert may be able to offer advice, therapy, suggestions, or group dynamics to provide support for someone struggling with anger management.

People of all ages may need to register for anger management seminars. Even children can sometimes lose control when they are overcome by extremely negative emotions stemming from family issues, emotional trauma, or other hurtful situations. Aged people with dementia or other conditions also struggle with anger, sometimes, and may need help in learning to redirect their frustrations and irritations in appropriate ways. Recovering addicts, chronic abusers, and the girl next door all may have the common need for learning how to manage stress and avoid acting out their anger in ways that are harmful to themselves or to others.

What Happens in Anger Management Seminars?

If you decide to attend one or more anger management seminars, you will probably meet a trained therapist or psychologist who will teach the group about anger as an emotion and its suitable as well as unsuitable manifestations. You will meet other people who are learning to recognize the triggers to their angry outbursts, and everyone can exchange ideas for what works and what doesnt in learning to process difficult emotions. You may be offered print or other media resources that can be taken home and utilized when needed. Perhaps you will receive individual counseling that will assist you in addressing unresolved personal or family issues that may be the source of unmanaged anger.

Give some thought to your emotional displays to decide whether anger management seminars may have something to offer you.

Dont Forget Masonry During Inspections

December 31st, 2011

Early in my career, I worked with a brick mason who declared masonry construction is forever. In a humorous response, I teased him saying hed spent too much time carrying mortar up a ladder. But actually I knew when properly installed, masonry really is solid; it serves the construction industry well and provides outstanding protection against the spread of fire. Given its tested reputation, many inspectors have developed a mindset that keeps them understanding that because masonry is fire-rated it needs no inspection, or that all 8-inch block has a two-hour fire rating.

Consider the common misconception that all concrete block has a rating. If you look at the UL Fire Resistance Directory, it shows the block used in a fire-rated assembly must meet certain requirements. A 2-hour firewall requires a class B block. The block alone must be constructed following certain specifications. Its fire resistance rating is based on the thickness of the block.

So whats the difference between a class B block and the typical concrete block available at a local lumberyard or home store? It comes down to the required thickness of the walls and the size of the hollow core. Blocks purchased at home repair and maintenance stores typically have large hollow cores and are not adequate in thickness or density for fire resistance.

So how does an inspector know if the block being used is of the correct classification? The construction design will indicate a required classification. Additionally, block shipments usually contain a certificate with its classification and inspectors should ask to see that certificate.

Block classification should be checked routinely and automatically. There are also various issues to consider before application such as the type of mortar used, how to keep the mortar from freezing, what accessories will be used and the bearing conditions and penetrations. All of these components comprise an assembly.

Indeed, masonry construction is solid and serves the construction industry well. And to make my brick mason friend happy, I will concede that it is almost forever. However, as with other types of construction, masonry too, is subject to inspection and must also comply with applicable codes and standards.

Oily Vs. Dry: Choosing What Skin Care Treatment To Use

December 31st, 2011

An unknown student once wrote on his desk, You can’t face your problem if your problem is your face. Though intended only for humor, this curious statement may mean a lot to those who are bothered by imperfections on their faces especially their skin. Often, people complain about having pimples, wrinkles or blemishes and are baffled with what to do about it. Advertisements seen on television, newspapers, posters and billboards show various products claiming to be the miracle solution for all skin problems. People who model these products highly entice the ordinary buyer to believe in their statements. It is not safe, however, just to follow blindly. When it comes to skin problems and treatments, it is best to understand the underlying causes or processes that are involved and how it is related in one’s situation.

Become a Millionare Selling Custom T Shirts

December 31st, 2011

The American dream is to strike it rich as a self made millionaire. While in theory this is a fantastic idea, the truth is that there are few industries left where people can start from scratch and make themselves a millionaire through nothing but their own perseverance and skills. Furthering this dilemma is the fact that a lot of those jobs require a very high level of education and more importantly the years spent obtaining that education. Ill let you in on a secret, I have a bachelors degree, and although I do not down play the importance of education for the vast majority of people (especially my children, who already think they know everything), I did not need that degree. I could just as easily started doing what I do now with nothing more than a GED. The wholesale T-Shirt industry is truly a way where a hardworking, motivated, and personable individual can make hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.

Chinatown Bus Lines Are A Budget Traveler’s Dream

December 31st, 2011

A guide to the Chinatown Bus

The word is outthe cheapest way to get from one major U.S. city to another is on the Chinatown bus. In recent years this has become transportation option of choice for budget travelers in New York, Washington DC, and Boston, and more recently on the West Coast. Students, backpackers, and an array of other savvy travelers have long loved the rock bottom prices that these bus companies offer. Despite the popularity of these bus lines it can still be difficult to find information on Chinatown bus service.

What exactly is a Chinatown Bus? Read on and you will have the inside track on this great budget travel option.

Chinatown Bus history

The Chinatown bus phenomenon began in the late 1990s when an entrepreneur in New Yorks Chinatown started running daily bus service from Chinatown in New York to Chinatown in Boston. The service was aimed at Asian immigrants who wanted to shop or visit relatives in either city and needed cheap and convenient transportation. The service was bare bonesno advertising, customer service, or bus stations. Customers simply went to the bus stop, waited for the bus (or van), and paid the driver upon boarding. For those willing to do without frills, they offered virtually the same service as traditional bus companies at a substantially lower price. Before long, the word spread and all kinds of people started using the service. It became especially popular with students, budget travelers, or people for whom the service was simply more convenient.

Soon more bus companies duplicated this model and started offering service in other cities. Now you can find this type of bus service in Philadelphia, Virginia, Baltimore Washington DC, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. At this point the term Chinatown bus is used more loosely to describe this sort of low-cost/low-frills service. Many, if not most, of the companies do not have Chinatown as their main location and may not cater to the immigrant population at all. These operators are also sometimes referred to as curbside operators.

How can tickets be so cheap?

$15 between New York to Boston? $25 from Las Vegas to Los Angeles? It seems hard to fathom. Chinatown bus companies are able to keep prices low because they operate in a fundamentally different way from traditional carriers. Foremost, the service is very basic. There is little in the way of customer service or amenities. Most of these operators do not have formal stations, picking up passengers at bus stops instead. They eschew traditional advertising in favor of word of mouth. Further, many of the operators play a very hands-on role in the operationyou will not see idle executives at a small independent bus company. Finally, these operators make sure they fill their buses. That is why Chinatown bus operators usually only operate on heavily trafficked routes. Indeed some companies only run buses at peak times.

Are they safe?

When these companies first started operating, concerns were raised about safety standards. There is still controversy within the bus industry about whether these newcomers are complying with the same regulations as the traditional companies. However, a task force set up by the Federal government to look at safety issues found that Chinatown bus companies did not perform better or worse than other types of bus companies (ie. charter, tour buses). All bus companies operating in the U.S. must undergo the same inspection standards and must comply with the same rules. Realistically there is probably a range of quality among Chinatown bus carriers. Some are fly-by-night operators trying to make a fast buck, while others are legitimate entrepreneurs who plan to grow and operate a long term business.

What you should expect

 No frills servicethe driver may be the ticket collector; there will not be a lot of customer service.

 Comfortable buses. Despite the low fares buses are usually quite nice. Most buses are comparable to Greyhound and many are actually more deluxe.

 Communication challenges. Drivers are legally required to speak enough English to help passengers in the case of emergency. In reality this is often adhered to rather loosely. At the very least, expect your driver to have an accent.

 Possible delays. Many of these bus routes are on highly congested roads. When the roads are busy, expect delays.

 Rest stops. Buses will have a lavatory on board but there is usually a 10 or 15 minute bathroom break on trips over 4 hours. Dont be late returning to the bus, the driver will not count heads before leaving at the appointed time.

 Full buses. Buses definitely sell out at peak times (weekends and evenings). Book ahead or get there early if you want secure a seat.

 Plastic Bags. An odd little quirk on Chinatown buses is that every aisle seat usually has a plastic grocery bag tied to the arm. I guess they find this is the best way to keep the buses clean.

How do I find the Chinatown Bus?

Again, Chinatown bus is a term used to describe a type of operator and not an individual bus company. Many unrelated bus companies fall into this category. Since most Chinatown buses do not spend money on advertising it can be difficult to find out details about schedules and bus stop locations. Many of the carriers are becoming savvier about the Internet and quite a few have websites with information. Usually an Internet search will yield links to bus service to your destination. There are also several directories, such as chinatown-bus.org that include links for most Chinatown bus companies and the authors employer, GotoBus.com, is a centralized booking site that has schedules and sells tickets online for most Chinatown bus companies.

The Chinatown bus is not for everyone. If you want an orderly system with American style customer service, you should probably stick to traditional carriers. However, if you know what to expect and come prepared with a sense of adventure and humor, you should enjoy the trip just fine. You will also enjoy the money you save!

Save Money And Get Rich Faster

December 30th, 2011

I just finished a Venti Latte at Starbucks, my fifth this week. As I enjoyed my coffee and thought about my next save money grow rich article, it hit me like a ton of bricks that my coffee could be the subject of my article. I started doing the math on the latte in my hand; Three dollars and forty cents multiplied by five times a week multiplied by fifty two weeks. Thats eight hundred and forty dollars Im spending a year on fancy coffee! If I saved that money each year and invested with five percent interest, which is pretty easy to get, I could have sixty thousand dollars in thirty years. Im spending sixty thousand dollars on a cup of coffee. Im not even accounting for inflation which is going to make that latte cost over eight dollars in the last eight to ten years of that thirty year period. At eight percent interest it would be one hundred and ten thousand dollars. Yikes!

What little things are you spending your money on? You might not drink fancy coffee, but Ill assure you that there are other things youre spending your money on that can be cut from your budget. That money can be saved, grown, and used to become rich or at least retire comfortably. How much do you spend on bottled water, cigarettes, beer, and lottery tickets? You dont have to give up all of your favorite vices, I mean luxury items. Life is pretty boring if all you do is save every penny, but it is a good idea to take an inventory of what you are spending, what you can give up, and what it is worth to you in future dollars.

Track your daily expenses for a week. Make a list of each of the expenses and separate them into the items that are absolutely necessary, like gas, and the items that are not necessary, like the coffee.

Here are some other areas that you can cut back and save:

- Eating out. Only eat out occasionally and take your lunch to work.
- The mid afternoon candy bar. Hey, its good for your health too.
- Pre-packed convenience foods.
- Carry over credit card interest. Pay your credit card bill off monthly.
- Extra cable channels.

Youll be amazing how fast you can come up with two hundred and fifty dollars a month that can be saved. Using the savings calculator at www.rich.fqte.com/savings-estimator.htm you can see that two hundred and fifty dollars saved monthly for thirty years adds up to a lot of money. Time to ditch the latte, save money, and get rich faster.

LA Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves

December 30th, 2011

The Braves loss a game against the Padres that only had two hits and they still manage to get the victory. It was the second time since 1985 that the Padres win a game with only two hits although the Braves had 5 hits only scored once in a game that was played in one of the toughest field to score the Petco Park.

The Braves are having a regular season so far. They are in third place in the NL East just behind the Mets and Philadelphia and if they want to have a chance to reach any of those two teams theyll need to start playing better baseball. They are having some problems in the bullpen especially with Sosa that hasnt been the pitcher he was last season at all.

If Sosa manages to play like he did last year that will bring some depth to the bullpen that can give some continuity to this team. Hopefully theyll get into a winning streak that allows them to get closer to Philadelphia and New York.

Lineup
1. Marcus Giles, 2.d B. 2. Edgar Renteria, SS. 3. Chipper Jones, 3rd B, 4. Andruw Jones, CF. Jeff Francoeur, RF. 6. Ryan Langerhans, LF. 7. Brian Jordan, 1st B. 8. Todd Pratt, C. 9. Jorge Sosa, P.

It seems that lately the Dodgers like to beat up the teams the play against. Last week against the Rockies Kenny Lofton hit a two-run triple, J.D. Drew tripled home another run and the Dodgers extended their winning streak to a season-high six games with an 8-1 victory on Tuesday night.

“It’s nice to know that we’re going to put up some runs out there,” starter Brad Penny said. “You knew Jeff Kent and Rafael Furcal were going to come around and start hitting the ball, because they’re too good not to. Our defense is playing real good right now. We’re not making the stupid mistakes we were earlier, and we’re not making the stupid mistakes as pitchers that we were earlier when the team wasn’t hitting.”

Theyre in second place in the NL West behind Arizona and if they continue to play like theyve been playing, they will certainty reach first place. It should be a good season for the Dodgers that have a great team; they just needed some important hitters like Kenny Lofton, Rafael Furcal and Jeff Kent to come around.

This match up between the Dodgers and Braves will be very exciting for all the sports betting enthusiasts to make some bets, since both teams need the victory it should be a great game.

Lineup
1. Rafael Furcal, SS. 2. Kenny Lofton, CF. 3. Nomar Garciaparra, 1st B. 4. J.D. Drew, RF. 5. Jeff Kent, 2nd B. 6. Willy Aybar, 3rd B. 7. Andre Ethier, LF. 8. Russell Martin, C. 9. Brad Penny, P

Just What Is Back Pain And Some Surprising Stats About It

December 30th, 2011

For decades the medical profession has been observing back pain to be common in society. Most noted victims to chronic back pain 2./’>being our senior citizens. The annoyances of back pain causes distress and can also prevent people from their regular activities including their work schedule and play time with family. Back pain can be the most difficult and frustrating type of pain to treat for both patients and their doctors.

Here are some of the common causes of back pain:
1.Muscles strains are considered to be the most common.
2.A ruptured intervertebral disc, otherwise known as a herniated disc which can lead to discogenic back pain
3.Improper posture, heavy lifting and repetitive motion can also cause back pain.
4.At the ageing stage, the spinal cord is likely to get constricted which can cause back pain. This is known as Spinal stenosis.
5.A person suffering from arthritis in the lumber region is commonly subjected to back pain.
6.Due to generative changes, the adjacent vertebrae in the spinal cord can become unstable and start to slip, resulting in back pain. This is called spondylolisthesis.
7.Sometimes psychological issues like fear, anxiety and depression too can add to discomfort and pain.

Types and treatments of back pain:
It can be classified into two categories.
1. Acute or short-term pain – Also known as lower back pain, the pain is probably due to lower back trauma of some sort. Incurred sports or vehicular injuries may have been the root cause of this undesirable back pain.
2. Chronic back pain: If the back pain persists for more than three months, it is considered to be chronic.

Here are some interesting facts about back pain:

* Through 1997 – 2001, the average days of work lost due to back injuries was 45.

* Around 30 to 40 percent of all workplace absences have been known to be due to back pain.

* Back strain accounts for 25% of all claims to the WCB.

* From 1997 – 2001 the WCB received 63,900 claims for back strain from males and 26,800 claims for back strain from females.

* More than two-thirds of back strains are caused by lifting and other exertions like pulling and pushing.

* Lower back pain accounts for two thirds of all back pain related cases.

Victims need to consult a doctor if their back pain persists for more than 72 hours. Surgery is not a great solution at any time, sometimes pain relievers will lessen the pain followed by the consumption of anti-inflammatory medication. Certain exercises are also recommended to strengthen the muscles and to overcome back pain. But they should be practiced in the presence of a professional or else they might make the situation worse if practiced in the wrong way.

If the pain spreads to legs, numbness in legs, rectal area and foot, development of nausea, fever, stomach pain and vomiting accompanied by back pain a person should immediately be reported to a doctor.

The key to proper treatment of back pain is to understand the cause and take preventative and pro-active measures to eliminate the pain. Remember, pain is always a sign that something else is wrong and if continually ignored may lead to more serious harm.

New Wave of Contactless Payments Speeds Up Profits

December 30th, 2011

Contactless payments create a whole new field of payment options for merchants. Contactless payments are quick, simple and pave the way for greater profits. A smart computer chip, with data and an antenna is embedded into a credit card, debit card or fob. When the card or fob is tapped on a radio frequency reader, the reader sends out a radio signal that activates the card, the information on the card is read and the payment is processed without a signature for purchases less than $25.00 with no chargebacks to the merchant.

Merchants dont need to worry about compatibility with their present systems or security said, Mohamed Khan, President and Founder of ViVOtech, Santa Clara, Calif.-based developer of contactless software, transaction management systems and readers.

We have been working closely with processors, card issuers and terminal providers to create an open system using the IS0 14443 standard. It uses secure encryption technology. The contactless card doesnt leave the customers hands therefore it is more secure and theres no skimming of data, assured Kahn who sees contactless as a great opportunity for merchants to increase revenue. He envisions contactless payments as a replacement for cash because they are faster, more convenient and cost less due to less shrinkage and less labor involved.

There are two types of contactless readers available: Peripheral Contactless Readers (PCRs) that plug in to existing POS terminals, and Integrated Contactless Readers (ICRs) that replace traditional readers and offer both magnetic-stripe- and contactless-reading capabilities. Merchants can purchase either type of reader. The PCRs usually cost around $150. Some merchant service providers such as Acies, however, are offering deals competitive plans and free readers with terminals.

David Robertson, Publisher of The Nilson Report (Carpinteria, Calif.) estimates that there are 12 million contactless cards currently in circulation in the U.S. He predicts that first contactless successes will be at the brand name retailers and then merchants in the areas where cards are deployed will follow suit when their customers ask to use their contactless cards.

Customers are asking for contactless in the New York Metro area where many cards have been dropped, says Oleg Frier CEO and President Acies, Inc, a New York City-headquartered national payment processing and financial services provider. Other areas where there are substantial contactless readers and cards include Atlanta, Philadelphia, Denver, Dallas and Orlando, says Khan.

Studies show the speed and added value of contactless payments because typically when someone does not pay with cash the amount of the transaction increases. Visa trials showed their contactless card transactions were 25% faster than cash. MasterCard PayPass trials showed an increase in transaction amounts and 12 to 18 second reductions in payment times for drive-thru transactions. Aite Group reports that CVS, the drug store chain, has found the average contactless transaction takes 12.5 seconds, versus 26.7 seconds for magnetic-stripe card payments and 33.7 seconds for a cash transaction.

Merchants who have a small time frame to service customers, such as fast food restaurants, coffee houses, movie theatres, drug stores, convenience stores and drive-thrus can benefit greatly from contactless payment methods. McDonalds, AMC Theatres, CVS, Meijer, Duane Reade, Regal Entertainment, Ritz Camera, Arbys, Cold Stone Creamery, Eckerd, Carls Jr., Good Times Burger, KFC, RaceTrac, Subway, Sonic (Drive-In Restaurants) and Walgreens have installed contactless readers. Convenience stores are gearing up to accept contactless payments. Contactless readers are being installed in 5,300 7-Eleven stores and 350 Sheetz stores. WaWa markets is installing over 2000 readers in its 540 stores co-branded with a credit card and loyalty program.

Card associations are also gung-ho for contactless payments.

It takes a village to launch a new technology, at Visa, we have an absolute commitment to assure success of contactless payments, said Elvira Swanson, Visa spokeswoman. Visa, with four million Visa Contactless cards in circulation, offers collateral materials, online demos, and merchant support teams to help educate merchants.

This is the real thing. Contactless is beyond the chicken and egg concept stage now, when you look at how many financial institutions have made the decision to offer contactless and the number of national merchants accepting it, said T.J. Sharkey, Vice President, Business Development, U.S. Acceptance, MasterCard International. MasterCard is supporting contactless in many ways. Merchants who accept contactless payments are listed at the MasterCard Web site where there are demonstrations on how their Tap N Go, PayPass cards work. Television commercials illustrating their PayPass cards are airing nationally.

Banks issuing contactless cards include Citibank, MBNA, HSBC (debit cards), JP Morgan Chase, Key Bank (debit cards) and Citizen.

There have been several pilot contactless programs in sports stadiums including San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Recently, another form factor of contactless has been added into the mix, with the trial of NFC (Near Field Communications) contactless payments from cell phones at the Philips Arena in Atlanta. Season ticket holders with Chase-issued Visa credit accounts and Cingular Wireless accounts can make contactless payments by simply holding their Nokia mobile phones equipped with Philips’ NFC semiconductor chips and ViVOtech software near one of the 150 terminals. NFC is compatible with ISO 1443 readers has other features such as the ability to transmit a coupon to a reader.

Contactless payments are the wave of the future and will change the way the world pays for purchases, Khan said enthusiastically.

New Alert System Raises The Bar on School Safety

December 30th, 2011

Parents. School officials. Emergency responders. With thousands of people to notify in the event of an emergency, how would your children’s school district handle the situation?

A school district in Klein, Texas, isn’t waiting for a crisis to occur to see how it fares. Thanks to funds through grants and private sponsorship, the 39,000 students and 35 schools that make up the Klein Independent School District, one of the nation’s largest school systems, is trying out a state-of-the-art alert system during the 2005-06 school year.

Developed by TechRadium Inc., the Immediate Response Information System, also known as IRIS, is a high-speed notification and response service that sends messages to thousands of people in seconds. It was designed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in response to a demand for more efficient ways to notify people in case of emergency.

To operate the system, a designated staff member sends out a message using a phone or Internet-connected computer. IRIS then transmits voice and text alerts to electronic devices, including home and cell phones, e-mail accounts, pagers, PDAs and fax machines. To ensure that the message was received, IRIS confirms completion and redials all missed contacts. Messages can be sent in one of 10 languages.

The system is valuable in sending emergency messages as well as routine school announcements. It requires no hardware, software or system installation for setup, making it a cost-effective way for parents and other community members to stay connected with their local schools.

Alarm Clocks An Insight

December 29th, 2011

For most the sound of an Alarm ringing first thing in the morning is a shock. You set it the night before, for whatever time you would like to wake up, and yet you are still annoyed with it when it actually goes off at the time you requested.

If you are like me, then you will prolong the act of getting up by constantly hitting the snooze button which gives you another few minutes before it rings out again. The irony is that I personally never go back to sleep as I wait in anticipation for the sound of the dreaded clock to go off yet again.

Clocks nowadays have very different sounds to wake you, but none of them in my experience are welcoming, my current clock has a very high intermittent bleeping sound which drives me crazy each morning, but without it, I would not wake up, so ironically I do depend on the irritating sound it makes. Perhaps I need to look at alternative clocks that offer a better noise to wake up to?
Traditional mechanical alarm clocks have a bell on top that rings, but digital alarm clocks can make other noises. Simple battery-powered alarm clocks make a beeping sound whereas novelty alarm clocks can speak, laugh, or sing.
Clocks have definitely improved in time (no pun intended) and the features too have improved these range from: built-in radios, nature sounds, dual alarms, CD players, iPod docking bays, sunrise simulators, programmable snooze etc.

The Digital Clock is probably one of the most popular Alarm clocks in use today because they can be very useful (they are usually fitted with in-built radios as standard and are usually inexpensive to purchase)
However the digital clock does have its drawbacks. Since they run on electricity and have no permanent memory, digital clocks must be reset every time they are moved or the power is cut off. This is a particular problem since a power outage during the night usually results in the clock failing to trigger the alarm in the morning.
To reduce the problem, later designs often incorporate a battery backup to maintain the time during power outages.
What does the future Alarm clock have in store for us?
Among annoyances caused by alarm clocks is sleep inertia, a feeling of grogginess that results from abrupt awakening. Progressive alarm clocks claim to solve this issue. They include sunrise alarm clocks, dawn simulators and progressive auditory alarm clocks.

Understanding Shutter Delay in Digital Cameras

December 29th, 2011

When using a digital camera to take action photos you will notice that there is a delay between the time you press the shutter button to the time the camera actually takes the photo. In most cases this delay is small enough and not noticeable but when taking action photos, when trying to capture an event that just happened or when trying to capture a moving object this delay can result in a photo that just missed the action. In this article you will better understand what causes the shutter delay and how you can overcome it.

A shutter delay is defined as the time gap between pressing the shutter button to the camera actually capturing the photo. There is no shutter delay in film cameras as in these cameras the shutter button is virtually connected to the shutter itself and holding down the button results in the camera taking a photo immediately. In digital cameras the shutter button is connected to a built-in micro computer and holding down the shutter button initiates a series of events that result in capturing a photo.

When you press the shutter button the camera goes through a series of setup events in order to get all its electronics ready. Only when these events are finished can the camera capture the photo. The time it takes for the camera to complete these events can vary but is usually around one second or so. When taking subsequent photos there is an addition delay as a result of the camera compressing the photo and writing it to the slow flash memory.

Although a circa one second delay does not seem long it can make the difference between capturing an action photo to missing it. Some cameras will also initiate a focus process when the shutter button is held down and will only take the photo when the focus is completed. This can add even more delay.

Although it is impossible to remove the shutter delay in your camera there are few practices that can help avoiding its results. For example many cameras include a burst mode. In burst mode the camera shoots a fast series of photos for as long as the shutter button is held down or until the cameras memory is full. In this mode the camera writes the photos to a temporary memory which is very fast but small. When the shutter button is released or the memory is full the camera starts the slow process of writing the photos to the flash memory.

Using the burst mode you can shoot fast photos of an action event and then choose the one that best captured the events. The speed and the amount of photos that the burst mode supports vary between cameras. Some high end cameras can take as much as ten photos over the course of one second.

Another delay that is a result of the digital camera technology is the Initial Delay. Most cameras will enter into a standby mode if not used for a certain amount of time. This time can vary but its usually in the few minutes range. When the camera goes into standby mode it turns off most of its electronics in order to save power. Usually pressing the shutter button will restart the camera but such a restart process is long and can take a few seconds. The result is a longer delay when taking a photo after the camera was idle for some time. In order to avoid this you would have to make sure that your camera is turned on and does not go into standby mode when taking action photos. Some cameras allow you to disable the automatic standby feature through a menu option. If your camera does not allow that you can keep it on by pressing the shutter button half way down every now and then. The downside of leaving the camera on all the time is wasting battery power. In order to maximize battery life in such scenarios you can disable the cameras LCD screen which consumes a lot of energy and use the view finder instead.

Another way to minimize the shutter delay is to avoid the automatic focus process which usually starts when the shutter button is held down. One way to do that is to hold the shutter button half way down. In most cameras the result will be a one time focus process and then a focus lock. The camera will stay in focus and when the shutter is fully pressed it will take a photo without re-focusing. Another option is to put the camera in manual focus.

It takes practice to get to know your camera and to get a feeling of the delays it introduces. Although there is no way to completely get rid of the delays you can master overcoming them by practicing taking action photos. New high end professional cameras have a very short delay and as the electronics improve cameras will eliminate the shutter delay altogether.

Healthy Food On A Tight Budget

December 29th, 2011

One of the easiest traps to fall into when money is tight is to eat unhealthy foods. Healthy foods seem to be so expensive, after all. However, there are ways to save money while eating healthier foods. Yes, you can skip the ramen noodle section of your grocery store and still feed your family well.

Whats the trick? Planning!

Whether you work at home or outside the home, your life can often be so hectic that it just seems simpler to order pizza or cook prepackaged convenience foods. However, these are typically much less healthy for you than foods you cook yourself.

Start by picking out the recipes you would like to make. Deciding on what you are serving ahead of time can keep you from deciding on something less healthy but easier to make just because you dont feel like taking the time to cook the healthier food.

If time is a major issue, consider recipes where you can prepare it partially or fully in advance. There are people who do an entire weeks cooking in one day, storing the meals in the refrigerator or freezer. Even if you cant entirely prepare the meal in advance, consider chopping the vegetables in advance.

Planning your meals in advance also helps with your grocery shopping. Use your plans to create your shopping list. You may even want to plan your meals at the same time as you plan your shopping list by taking a look at what is on special at whichever grocery stores you plan to shop at. Buying items that are on special can save you quite a bit of money. You may even want to stock up.

To save as much as possible, limit yourself to what is on that list. No impulse purchases! It takes self discipline, but cutting back on impulse items can be a huge help.

They may seem expensive, but fruits and vegetables that are in season are actually quite affordable, and can be an excellent alternative to sugary or salty snacks. Their frozen counterparts are also quite good for you and may be quite affordable.

If you have space in the freezer, buy meats when they are at their best discount. You will want to keep track of what a good price is for each kind of meat. You will also want to be aware of when products get marked down. I know that my local Albertsons, for example, generally marks their ground beef from the butcher department to $1/pound somewhere around 9 oclock every evening. Guess what time I shop there when I need ground beef?

Make the most of your leftovers. Its all to easy to forget them and have to clean out the fridge several days later. Wasted food is money youre throwing out. Pull those leftovers out for lunch!

Finally, pay attention to how youre cooking your food. You may not need as much oil as youve been using, for example. Stir frying can be a great way to mix your meat and vegetables up with a delicious sauce. Drain the grease when you cook ground beef to make it a little healthier. Trim excess fat from other meats to make them just a little better for you. And dont forget to eat your vegetables! Try mixing them up with some spices rather than butter… there are wonderful ways to bring out the flavors of vegetables.

Virginia Travel For Kids

December 28th, 2011

It is particularly annoying to get younger kids to cooperate during travel. But it is not their fault, because at their age they are naturally more inquisitive and more active. They are not content to stay put and lounge in the beach or hotel. They want lots of actions, something that your dream beach vacation cannot satisfy. Why not change your dream relaxation vacation to a fun family holiday? Virginia travel offers two exciting and affordable theme parks for your family’s enjoyment.

These theme parks are not prohibitively-priced, meaning you can still afford to stay at nice hotels. Hotels dot the Virginian landscape, and are especially near the theme parks. After all, there is no better way to end a fun afternoon than by sleeping in a cozy room. Although these theme parks are not like Disneyland which have its own hotel, the thrill rides and sights more than suffice for this shortcoming. Paramount’s Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens Williamsburg make Virginia travel something the whole family can enjoy.

Paramount’s Kings Dominion boasts of being a water and theme park in one. It is a 400-acre affair with over 200 attractions and rides. International roller coaster fanatics troop to Kings Dominion for its 13 famous and world-class coasters. Teenagers and daring adults alike enjoy the thrilling loops and drops of these coasters. The park features Hypersonic XLC, the only American coaster that uses compressed air for launch power. Volcano Blast Coaster shoots up over a volcanic crater before diving at over 70 mph. There are also wooden coasters like the Rebel Yell and Hurler. Virginia is famous for its cinema complexes, and its theme park are not complete without movies. There are two rides that are inspired by major motion pictures. Tomb Raider Firefall engages all the senses and makes riders feel that they are part of the big Lara Croft movie or video game. Italian Job Turbo Coaster mimics the stunt chase scenes from the popular movie. Speed through the garage and the tunnels in mini Coopers and relive the film’s thrilling chase. If the younger kids are not up to yelling themselves hoarse on the coasters, the Nickelodeon Central is alive with their favorite characters. Taking pictures and playing with Dora, the Rugrats, Spongebob, Scooby, and Jimmy Neutron are definitely allowed. There are also regular kiddie games wherein toddlers get to play and meet other children. For excitement, there is a spooky mansion and the Mystery Machine. All this fun for a fraction of a beach holiday. Plus, there are also season tickets and family promos.

For around-the-world fun, Busch Gardens Williamsburg is the place to go. The park is divided into six countries: Ireland, France, Scotland, Italy, Germany, and England. Each “country” showcases the best of their cultures with excellent food, landmarks, gardens, and parks. The authentic design and feel of the “countries” are enough to make visitors feel that they are country-hopping. The Busch Gardens is also home to a couple of the planet’s best 25 roller coasters: Alpengeist and Apollo’s Chariot. Virginia travel is not complete without some animal fun. Aside from the rides, the park is also big on environmental issues. It hosts a mini-zoo and animal sanctuary where the kids can see and interact with wolves, raptors, reptiles, and all things feathered, furry, and scaly. There are also lectures about environmental preservation. The park also offers discounts by availing of special cards and family promotions. Free entrance is also awarded to families of US service men.

With these two parks, Virginia travel is fun, easy, and very affordable. It also provides great bonding time for you and your family. Now, who says vacationing with kids is a hard chore?

The State Park Pass

December 28th, 2011

Camping is a great past time or mini vacation that can be enjoyed as an individual, as a couple or as a family. Many people enjoy camping at state parks, where the amenities are plentiful and the fees are affordable. The wonderful thing about the state park systems is that they offer ample opportunities for the public to enjoy the great outdoors as nature intended. No matter what state you live in, theres almost always a state park within reasonable driving distance from your home.

State parks are great for camping when they are less crowed during the weekdays, but on the weekends and in the warmer months, they become very busy. Most people seek out the more secluded areas to camp in for more privacy and so they are not bothered with rowdy nearby campers. Having a reasonable distance between campsites is more desirable to campers and this is considered when choosing a state park to purchase a pass from. Not many people choose over crowded state parks with campers elbow to elbow, they want their own space.

The best way to plan a camping trip to a state park is to first select which state park you want to camp at, check the availability of the camp sites and get the reservation information you need and then obtain a pass. Most of this information is available online with comparable charts to make it easier to choose a state park with all the amenities youre looking for. Especially if you are a camping enthusiast that frequently goes camping at a particular state park, obtaining a pass can be a great benefit. Some passes can give you rights to a specific location and you can buy these passes each time you visit or by the season or the year.

Campers love these state park passes because it allows them easy access to a fantastic facilities used to make your camping experience more comfortable and more enjoyable. Some of the amenities state parks will offer are: clean restrooms, hot showers, convenience stores, tackle shop, boat rental, boat launches, marinas, weekend movies, playgrounds, small beach, hiking trails, fire pit, horse riding and other planned activities. Although the restrooms are public, they are often kept clean and sanitary. The stores are great for buying food and necessities, because no matter how carefully you plan, something will most likely be forgotten. Being able to rent a boat is great if you enjoy boating, but dont actually own a boat and you wont have to lug a boat to and from the camp site. The playgrounds, weekend movies and other planned activities are wonderful for keeping the kids busy so mom and dad can relax and enjoy themselves.

Many of these state parks also offer electric, water and garbage or dump stations for your convenience, but may charge a small fee in addition to your state park pass to use them extra amenities. All of these amenities are regularly offered to those RV campers and to those campers who use tents and sleep with nature. Many of these amenities may vary from state to state and park to park and are to be considered a privilege and used responsibly. Any irresponsible usage of the state parks amenities can revoke your rights to use them and any violation of rules can have you banned from the park.

For many of those outdoor enthusiasts, no summer is complete without spending quality time in the great outdoors. Camping is the best way for some people to get away from their everyday lives and to commune with nature and find the peace and relaxation their body needs. Camping is the perfect way of getting away from the television, computer, telephones, traffic and everything else that can distract a person from the ultimate relation the body needs.

Its important to show respect for all amenities in the state park, camp responsibly, and clean up after yourself. If you make a mess, clean it up. If something breaks, tell the park rangers about it immediately, so it can be fixed or replaced in time for the next campers. Especially if this is a state park that you would like to return to, leave the camp site in the condition you have found it, or even better.

To Pee or Not To Pee

December 28th, 2011

The eternal question of wetsuit urination

If it hasnt happened to you already, it will. You descend to 15 feet, and youll feel the sudden urge. You cant hold it. And theres no way you can get to a bathroom without spoiling the whole dive. So you consider if Im in the water. my urine will just dissipate and dissolve and disappear. Is it OK to whiz in the wetsuit?

The simple answer is yes. Take a leak.

The truth is, there is no health risk to watering the neoprene. Many people do not realize that urine unlike feces – is sterile, unless you have a urinary tract infection. It contains a lot of dissolved bodily waste (mainly nitrates), but poses no health risk to you. The only symptom of wetsuit whizzing is temporary warmth in your vicinity. But beware, if your urine is dark (a sign that it is probably strongly odorous as well), you might get a reaction from other divers, especially if they happen to swim through your yellowish cloud of warmth.

As a frequent diver, your best strategy for dealing with this common situation is counterintuitive: drink more water. A hydrated diver can urinate in their wetsuit and their urine will not be dark or smelly. You have surely noticed the difference between your morning pee and your pee after (or during) a long night of drinking. Dehydration is very common, yet minimal dehydration is tolerated and goes unnoticed by most people because of the symptoms are fairly mild. If you are properly hydrated, your urine is clear and odorless. A practical diver should drink plenty of fluids the night before and the morning of a dive, to ensure adequate hydration.

You may hear divers joke about warming the wetsuit. The warmth offered by wetsuit irrigation is comfortable, but temporary. Yes, when you pee you will feel warm initially, but in the end it will actually lower your overall body temperature.

You might notice that even though you relieved yourself before the dive, you need to go again when you get down to 20 feet. Why do you need to pee again? You may be experiencing a phenomenon called immersion duiresis: as a response to an increase in pressure, your body feels compressed and your kidneys start to produce urine.

Since you already rinse your wetsuit after each dive, you dont need to be concerned about odor from your underwater urine. An unrinsed wetsuit develops its lovely stink from algae and crud in the water, not from your urine. Tinkle away!

Sometimes Evil Drives A Minivan

December 28th, 2011

The title comes from a Desperate Housewives episode, a program that has exemplified to great effect the idea that evil doesn’t just come in the form of dictators, suicide bombers, corrupt governments, or disasters, but rather, that evil subsists among the ordinary and the mundane. It’s an every day occurrence and it walks among us, in the suburbs and the cities, as our co-workers, friends, neighbors, and even as our own family members. Those same universal themes are at the crux of my novel, Shades of Darkness, Shades of Grace.
